Gold Pokémon cards: which are real, and what they're worth

Real gold Pokémon cards come out of booster packs as Gold Rares, Hyper Rares, and Mega Hyper Rares. We priced every one in the sets we track, and explain how to spot the gold foil cards that aren't real.

Market analysis

New to pull rates? The terms in 30 seconds
“1 in 92 packs”
On average, you'd open 92 packs to pull one. It's an average, not a promise: you could hit it in pack 3 or go 300 without one.
SIR (Special Illustration Rare)
Full-art cards with special artwork. Usually a set's most valuable pulls.
IR (Illustration Rare)
Art cards of single Pokémon. More common than SIRs, and often collected as a set.
Hyper Rare
The gold cards. Among the rarest pulls in modern sets.
Double Rare / Ultra Rare
The ex and full-art cards that make up most of a set's hits.
Booster box / ETB
A booster box has 36 packs. An Elite Trainer Box (ETB) has 9, plus sleeves and accessories.

Real gold Pokémon cards come out of booster packs. They’re secret rares with a gold border and a gold, textured finish, numbered past the set’s printed total (Obsidian Flames’ gold Charizard ex is 228/197). Each era gives them a different name: Gold Rare in Sword & Shield, Hyper Rare in Scarlet & Violet, and Mega Hyper Rare in the current Mega Evolution series.

The gold “foil” cards sold in big bundles online, with made-up attacks and HP in the thousands, are not official Pokémon cards. A few official gold and metal cards were sold outside packs, and we cover those too.

Key takeaways

  • We track 118 gold cards across 24 sets. The median sells for $7.87, and 73 of them sell for under $10.
  • Mega Hyper Rares are the exception, along with Crown Zenith’s four gold VSTARs. Each recent Mega Evolution main set prints just one Mega Hyper Rare, about 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 1,667 packs in the 2026 main sets. They sell for $92.76 to $266.90.
  • In Scarlet & Violet, gold is the cheap secret rare. A specific Hyper Rare is about as hard to pull as a specific Special Illustration Rare, but the median one sells for about 32% of the set’s median SIR.
  • Gold Charizard: the most valuable we track is Mega Charizard Y ex from Ascended Heroes at $266.90.
  • Gold foil bundles are fake. If it came in a lot of 50 “gold cards” rather than an official sealed product, it isn’t a real Pokémon card.

What counts as a real gold Pokémon card#

Era Name on the card list What’s gold Sets we track
Sword & Shield (2020–2023) Gold Rare (Secret Rare) Trainers, Items, Energy, and V or VSTAR Pokémon, numbered past the set total Evolving Skies, Astral Radiance, Lost Origin, Silver Tempest
Sword & Shield galleries Trainer Gallery and Galarian Gallery golds Black-and-gold VMAX cards and gold VSTARs in the gallery subsets Lost Origin, Silver Tempest, Crown Zenith
Scarlet & Violet (2023–2025) Hyper Rare Gold, etched versions of Pokémon ex, Supporters, Items, and Energy Every Scarlet & Violet set we track
Mega Evolution (2025–) Mega Hyper Rare A gold Mega Pokémon ex, usually one per set Every Mega Evolution set we track

A real gold card has the same back, set symbol, and copyright line as every other card in its set, and its number sits above the set total. The gold has a texture you can feel: fine etched lines across the artwork and border. It’s printed on card stock, so it bends like any other card, not like foil or plastic.

Prices as of Oct 19, 2026. Odds assume every card in a rarity is equally likely; a dash means we don’t have a measured rate for that rarity.

All 10 gold cards selling for $100 or more are Mega Hyper Rares or Crown Zenith’s gold VSTARs. Leave those out and the median gold card sells for $6.40.

Gold Charizard cards#

“Gold Charizard” can mean four different things. The first is a gold Charizard card from a booster pack. These are the ones we price:

  • Mega Charizard Y ex (Ascended Heroes #294, Mega Hyper Rare): $266.90, about 1 in 1,053 packs
  • Mega Charizard X ex (Phantasmal Flames #130, Mega Hyper Rare): $201.83, about 1 in 1,250 packs
  • Charizard ex (Obsidian Flames #228, Hyper Rare): $31.85, about 1 in 156 packs

The other three:

  • Charizard Gold Star (Dragon Frontiers, 2006). The “gold” is the star next to its name, not the card. We don’t have a price we trust for it yet.
  • The metal Charizard from the Celebrations Ultra-Premium Collection (Oct 22, 2021, $119.99 list price). It’s an official, solid-metal copy of the Base Set Charizard, not a playable card.
  • Burger King’s gold-plated Charizard from 1999, one of six 23-karat gold-plated cards. More on both below.

Every Charizard printing, gold or not, is on our Charizard card page.

Are gold Pokémon cards worth anything?#

Usually a little; sometimes a lot. Across the 118 gold cards we track:

  • 62% sell for under $10.
  • 30% sell for $10 to $100.
  • 8% sell for $100 or more.

Gold Items and Energy are usually the cheapest. Gold Pokémon cost more, and a popular Pokémon costs more still.

Gold vs. Special Illustration Rares in Scarlet & Violet

In every Scarlet & Violet set we track, Hyper Rares are a rarer pull than Special Illustration Rares. But a set prints fewer gold cards than SIRs, so one specific gold card is about as hard to pull as one specific SIR, and in 3 of these 13 sets it’s harder. It still sells for less. Collectors pay for artwork, and Special Illustration Rares have it.

Why Mega Hyper Rares cost more

Mega Evolution flipped the pattern. Since Phantasmal Flames, each main set prints one Mega Hyper Rare instead of three to nine gold cards, so that one card carries the whole rarity: about 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 1,667 packs in the 2026 main sets, against about 1 in 80 for any Special Illustration Rare. It’s also always a Mega Pokémon ex, the series’ headline card. The first Mega Evolution set and the Ascended Heroes special set print two each.

At those odds, pulling a specific Mega Hyper Rare costs far more in packs than buying it. Our specific SIR odds guide runs the same math for chase cards.

Are gold Pokémon cards fake?#

Gold cards from booster packs are real. The gold cards sold in bulk, often 50 or more to a box with a “gold foil” or “VMAX” label, are not made by The Pokémon Company. Signs you have one:

  1. It didn’t come from an official product. Real gold cards come out of booster packs or official collection boxes.
  2. The numbers are wrong. Fakes often print HP in the thousands, attack damage no real card has, or no set symbol and collector number at all.
  3. It feels like foil or plastic. Real gold cards are printed on card stock with an etched texture. Many fakes are flat, shiny foil that creases.
  4. The text is off. Look for misspelled names and attacks, odd fonts, and a missing or garbled copyright line at the bottom.

Our guide on how to tell if Pokémon cards are fake covers the light test, the back, and the other checks that work on any card.

How to price a gold card you own#

  1. Find the collector number in the bottom corner. If it’s above the set total (like 228/197), it’s a secret rare.
  2. Look it up in our price tracker or the set’s card list. Every set we track has one, linked from its set page.
  3. For a valuable card, check recent sold listings and consider grading. Our grading cost guide shows when it pays.

Where these numbers come from#

Card prices are ungraded TCGplayer market prices from our price data, refreshed in the price tracker. Pull odds come from verified openings in our evidence registry and assume every card within a rarity is equally likely. “Gold” here means the rarities printed as gold cards: Sword & Shield Gold Rares and gallery golds, Scarlet & Violet Hyper Rares, and Mega Evolution Mega Hyper Rares. Rainbow Rares and the 30th Celebration’s Futuristic and RGB rares aren’t counted. The Burger King and Celebrations details were checked Oct 19, 2026 against Pokémon World news, Burger King trading nights (archived) and PokeBeach, Metal Charizard and Pikachu cards from Celebrations revealed.
